Steel Cage Match: Green Day vs. Weezer

I've been thinking about this one for a while now and I want to know what other people think, so this is kind of a survey. My main question is "Green Day vs. Weezer: Who has had the bigger downfall?" In my opinion, they were both great bands at one time and now are just pretty awful. Green Day had the first two on Lookout! that were pretty damn good, Dookie is fantastic, and Insomniac isn't bad. Weezer had the Blue Album and Pinkerton, both basically perfect, and maybe you could at least say the Green Album was ok, maybe. Now there are all kinds of ways to look at this, like "If you had free tickets to see either one now, who would you rather see?" Would you rather have the chance of hearing Welcome to Paradise followed by American Idiot or Say It Ain't So followed by Beverly Hills? Also, "If you were on a deserted island and had to pick between having Green Day's entire catalog or Weezer's for the rest of your life?" Or maybe just "Who has the better overall career?" You decide! I don't know that I have a definite answer but I have some good thoughts. And, there are probably some other bands that could fit into this discussion but I can't think of them off the top of my head. So, let us know what you think!

Surfer Blood: Astro Coast

This is the debut album from West Palm Beach, Florida’s Surfer Blood entitled Astro Coast and was released on Kanine Records. Their sound kind of continues in the vain of the “lo-fi” that seemed to almost overtake 2009. The only difference is that they don’t use the “lo-fi” angle as a crutch to make the music seem more authentic. I guess what I mean is they use it as a tool and not to skew focus. Anyway, I’ve read some reviews that compare Surfer Blood to bands like early Weezer and The Shins and I think that is a pretty decent comparison. It’s poppy but still manages to rock out pretty consistently. Dig it.

Fikaked: New Radiohead & Weezer

Well, it's not what everyone was hoping for, but it's something new from Radiohead, so it's hard to complain too much. "These Are My Twisted Words" might actually be the most abstract, out there song they've released since Amnesiac. The band is offering the track as a free download (don't believe there's even the option to pay this time), and as part of the zip file you get a ridiculous amount of artwork similar to what you see above, along with some cryptic info. No real word on whether or not this is part of something bigger, so for now you'll just have to be content with the fact that you've got some new Radiohead to listen to:

Weezer have a new album coming out in October. Not holding my breath, but this advance track is the best thing they've released since "Island in the Sun":
