Track of the Week: Foreign Born's "Blood Oranges"

Thursday, July 23, 2009

"Blood Oranges" is from Foreign Born's just-released (and favorably Pitchfork-reviewed) Person to Person. This track really sounds similar to Calla (one of my favorite bands from the early 2000s) but the rest of the album breaks from the "slow-core" trend:

Track of the Week: Discovery's "So Insane"

Wednesday, June 24, 2009

Posted this track last week in "Daily!" because I was so pumped about it, but evidently the link is broken, so we're gonna have another go at it. Plus, this basically has to be a "Track of the Week". In fact, I'd be pretty shocked if it doesn't end up as the track of the summer. Yeah, it's that good:

Track of the Week: Passion Pit's "Sleepy Head"

Wednesday, June 17, 2009

A lot can be written about these guys, and it already has, as their sound seems to lend itself to comparisons with every other "synth-rock" act that's out there. Pitchfork basically likens Manners to the album that would have existed if MGMT's Oracular Spectacular hadn't filled in the gaps between hit tracks with worthless material. I don't know if I agree with any of that statement (including the jab at Oracular); they remind me more of Black Kids, other than the fact that they managed to make a spectacular LP after a super-buzzed-about EP. Bottom line: pretty much every song on this album is single-worthy, and if you like "Sleepy Head", you're probably going to dig all 45 minutes of Manners:

Track of the Week: Dark Night of the Soul's "Jaykub"

Wednesday, May 27, 2009

Dark Night of the Soul is a concept album/side project involving two awesome artists (Dangermouse & Sparklehorse) that may never see the light of day, at least in terms of official release. Both of these guys are great in their own right, and they even managed to bring in a few more ringers to round it out. Unfortunately, it seems corporate BS may prevent this thing from being produced for mass-consumption. Dangermouse & Sparklehorse have even gone so far as to sell the elaborate packaging, with a blank recordable disk included, apparently encouraging the public to download it at their leisure. "Jaykub" features Jason Lytle, of Grandaddy. Man, record labels suck:

Track of the Week: Grizzly Bear's "Two Weeks"

Wednesday, May 13, 2009

On the first single from Veckatimest, Grizzly Bear manage to simultaneously sound both grimy and beautiful. Very similar to early French Kicks stuff, and definitely one of the best tracks of the year. Dig it:

Track of the Week: New Ruins' "Years"

Wednesday, April 15, 2009

This week's track comes from my good friends in New Ruins (of Champaign, Illinois). Their new album, entitled We Make Our Own Bad Luck, is outstanding from start to finish, but "Years" is the song I can't manage to get out of my head:
