TGI Ugly Casanova

Thursday, June 3, 2010

2 new Ugly Casanova songs from the upcoming 180 South documentary soundtrack. I can't wait for this to come out. I've been having dreams where I'm at school surrounded by people and I look down to find out I am wearing no clothes. Thank goodness for cliches. The teacher notices, turns into Isaac Brock, points to the door, says "Sha-shaw, sha-shaw!" in the voice of Dale Gribble, and as the whiskey bottle he whips at me hits me right in the face I wake up. I'm hoping maybe it'll come true one day. The DVD comes out on June 8th, the soundtrack on June 22nd. Check em out dawg!

180° South, with Issac Brock, James Mercer & more!

Thursday, April 22, 2010

First of all, Ugly Casanova's 2002 album Sharpen Your Teeth is one of my favorite albums of all time and now we're getting some more! The documentary "180 South: Conquerors of the Useless" will be released on DVD, June 8th. According to a press release, 180 South "retraces Yvon Chouinard's and Doug Tompkins' epic 1968 journey to Patagonia through the eyes of adventurer Jeff Johnson." The soundtrack features Issac Brock/Ugly Casanova, James Mercer of The Shins, Mason Jennings, and Love As Laughter, and will be released on June 22 on Brushfire Records. It looks like there are 9 Ugly Casanova songs, one of which is "Hotcha Girls" from Sharpen Your Teeth, the other 8 are all new! There are 2 songs from James Mercer including a cover of Neil Young's "Journey Through the Past", and then 1 from Mason Jennings, Love As Laughter, and Jack Johnson respectively. As far as I know, there is no word on whether it will be Ugly Casanova in true form, or if it will just be Brock. Here's to hoping John Orth and Tim Rutili make appearances! Emmet Malloy, director of White Stripes' Under Great White Northern Lights, produced the film and put together the soundtrack. Exciting stuff kids! Here is a trailer for the film and a track list below...

Fikaked! Tracks: Julian Plenti, Nurses, Fruit Bats, The Antlers, & Modest Mouse

Tuesday, August 4, 2009

Julian Plenti is actually Paul Banks, the lead singer from one of my favorite early '00s bands, Interpol. Definitely similar in a lot of ways to Banks' full-time band (i.e. the unique voice), but there are some obvious differences, too. Namely, Skyscraper is actually really catchy and poppy in some places. "Only If You Run":

Nurses kinda have the Animal Collective, weirdly-catchy psych-pop thing going on. "Technicolor":
In case you've never heard of Fruit Bats, they're a Sub Pop band that's been around for a while. They're from Chicago originally, but make southern rock that reminds me a lot of early Tom Petty. "The Ruminant Band":
The Antlers' Hospice was just named "Best New Music" by Pitchfork Media for being both "ambient and anthemic". If you're into Arcade Fire, chances are you're going to dig all or some of this. "Two":

You've probably already heard most of the material from Modest Mouse's newest release, No One's First, and You're Next, an ep that compiles 7"s, b-sides, and bonus tracks from the past 5 or 6 years (as they did with Building Nothing Out of Something, etc.). Worth getting ahold of whether you're a casual fan or a die-hard. "The Whale Song":

Fikaked: Daily!

Thursday, June 18, 2009

  • In case you haven't heard, the keyboardist from Vampire Weekend and the lead vocalist from Ra Ra Riot have partnered up to form Discovery, and it's awesome. It's basically indie new wave electro pop, kinda similar to Clor. Kickin' the Peanuts has the album posted here for download, and You can hear the first single right here. Be warned, listening almost guarantees immediate addiction:

  • Pitchfork has an 30 minute Vampire Weekend set from last summer's Pitchfork festival posted here. "Campus":

Modest Mouse/Vampire Weekend Late Night Performances

Late night television was an indie rock extravaganza on Wednesday, featuring brand new tracks from both Modest Mouse and Vampire Weekend. Bury me with Walcott:

Modest Mouse performing "Satellite Skin" on The Late Show with David Letterman:
