I love it when bands do this. Seriously, when it comes down to it, all the anticipation, expectations, and hype that come with the waiting for the next great album, movie, etc. is at worst extremely detrimental and at best completely worthless. Something is going to be either good or bad regardless of what we expect it to be, and 9 out of 10 times the only impact expectations have on any new release is that of increasing the disappointment. Probably the greatest thing that's happened in the realm of music since Radiohead said "Hey, our new album is absolutely nothing like all the stuff we've done that made you love us" was when Radiohead said "Hey, we finished our new album that you weren't even really sure that we were working on and we're releasing it tomorrow. Also, you can download it for nothing." Remember that? Maybe the coolest thing ever. Last week marked the 2nd time Girl Talk has done it since then. I didn't post it then because all the traffic created a wormhole on their label's website, and any efforts to download it would have been fruitless anyway. Things seem pretty stable now though, and they've even posted multiple mirrors in case it happens again. Oh, and the album itself? It's called All Day, and it totally lives up to the expectations that you didn't get to have.

Just thought this was extremely relevant because of the resurface of a certain person who shall not be named. I will give hints though. He went off on a flurry of posts earlier, even though it could almost be called a 'fury'. Although not much has really happened since his vaporization into wherever, I really would like to clue this individual into a few things that occurred since. First -
Belle and Sebastian came out with something new. Honestly, it's pretty much the standard from them but always enjoyable. Major highlight is the song with Norah Jones. Here ya go, Howard.

It's ok, Howard, we understand, just don't let it happen again. I'll give ya my personal fav.

The next song I know you've heard. I posted it on my facebook page and I really didn't get the response I was hoping for. I know I have some sketchy tastes in tunes but, truthfully, don't we all? Just go with the flow and get the album from this band. Not disappointing in the least. I've heard worse from many better.

The next entry comes from someone I'm really not sure you have explored yet. They have an EP and are getting ready to blow people's heads off like Rambo here pretty soon with an LP. Our boy Washed Out did a super dope remix of one of their songs and they had a video on the Pitchfork.tv site. Which, of course, makes them the coolest of the cool. Enough booyah.

KanYe's New Album: It's Time to Get Excited

Last weekends "under a rock" post was incomplete. KanYe has a new record, My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy, being released November 22, and, like always, anyone who is a fan of hip-hop (or music in general) should be excited. If you think you need a reason to be (you don't), take a look at the list of collaborators, which includes none other than Justin Vernon (Bon Iver). Twice. I know, West's public schtick is getting a bit old, but listen to "Lost in the World", and try to not be pumped. You can't:

Also, in case you weren't aware, back in August West started a program called "GOOD Fridays". The basic premise involves a free track being released every Friday until Christmas. Not a completely novel idea, but still pretty cool coming from a guy who works within the jurisdiction of The Evil Empire (The RIAA). Not all of the songs involve West, but three of them will be on Dark Twisted Fantasy, including "Lost in the World". Taken along with Cee-Lo covering Band of Horses' "No One is Gonna Love You" on his new album, it seems as though a totally boss trend may be taking root here. Now we just need KanYe to return the favor on Bon Iver's next album...

What's Up, Planet Earth?

Life has refused to move out of the fast lane for the past couple months, hence, not much action around here. Nonetheless, 2010 has kept on trucking (although the ridiculousness of the weather here in the midwest was starting to make me wonder whether or not we were ever going to make it to fall), and the onslaught of great artists releasing new material has continued. So as of right now, I'm kinda feeling like I just crawled out from under a rock (no disrespect to the guy who actually did spend a ton of time under a rock). Here's what I've been "surviving on":

For me, the new Deerhunter album flat-out has to be in the conversation for album of the year. Bradford Cox is on one abnormally filthy roll. So far, two singles have been released. "Revival" is classic Deerhunter/Cox in all their poppy, reverb-dredged glory. "Helicopter", while definitely from the same family tree, is a more ambient, slow-burning track, but ultimately just as satisfying.

There's a pretty good possibility Sufjan Steven's first new album in half a decade is going to be in that same conversation before it's all said and done. It's all Sufjan, yet nothing like the rest of his catalogue. Whereas all of his previous output has been meticulously constructed with kid gloves and orchestral, The Age of Adz is more raw, emotional, and electronic. I'd also deem it less of a "grower" than Illinois, Michigan, etc. "Too Much" is pretty much a perfect snap shot of all of that.

Junip, José González' full band project, is obviously not in the business of writing checks that they can't cash. Fields delivers on the promise of "Always" in a big way. In fact, it's in many ways more satisfying than a similar project from a similar artist, Justin Veron's Volcano Choir. Hope this isn't a flash in the pan for González...

Junip: "Always"

Maximum Balloon is the solo project of David Sitek, guitarist and production mastermind behind TV on the Radio. This is more so the Dr. Dre-type solo project rather than say, that of Jeremy Enigk. In other words, Sitek handles the production and instrumentation, but incorporates a slew of guest vocalists rather than taking that on himself. In many ways it feels like a TVOTR record, which is to be expected with Sitek's production along with Tunde Adebimpe and Kyp Malone handling the vocals on a couple tracks. But it is different. The entire album would sit on the extreme tech-y-ness edge of TVOTR's musical spectrum, incorporating very little live instrumentation. All that being said, it's really, really good. Case in point: "Groove Me" is destined to be stuck in your head when you wake up tomorrow.

This entry is entirely a census on the 'style' of music that you prefer. And when I say 'prefer' I mean the band(s) that you listen to as a standard and think, "Hey, you know what? I'm in a good mood, I'm ready to rock and I really don't care what you think". Not necessarily a guilty pleasures type of thing but your 'go-to' staples when you can't think of anything else. Just to get the party started I'll give you mine. Hopefully, it's not that terrible when it comes to the public opinion but that's kinda the whole point. Name whatever is on your mix-tape to yourself or playlist that you wish everyone else loved. What I'm gonna do is I'm gonna name the bands that EVERY TIME I listen to them I literally get chills. You know it happens to you. I can't be the only one. And here we go -

Hot Water Music - anything on No Division and before; literally impossible to recreate that much intensity/passion/hate into music - no question. NO QUESTION!!! I honestly feel sorry for anyone who has not heard them. Conviction, loyalty, self-righteousness...you know what, find out for your damn self.

Minus the Bear - although it may not seem like it could rock the house from the first time you listen to it but you really cannot argue with the...the...absolute filthyness. Just listen to 'Houston, We Have Uh-Oh' or 'Absinthe At the Fly Honey Warehouse'. Your life will change positively.

Passion Pit - honestly, there is no way in hell that anyone on the planet or any planet we know of that could listen to any of their songs and not have a smile forced on his/her face.

Every Time I Die - I really dig these fellas and the main reason is because they just love to rock. There are no songs on any album that try to change the pace to try to keep people interested. It's just straight up rock. No excuses and no suckers. Like it or leave it - they really don't care.

Alkaline Trio - I'm gonna limit this entry to the albums 'Goddamnit' and 'Maybe I'll Catch Fire' because that is pretty much the only thing they should have put out. Stable punk-ish roots, great vocals, and un-recreatable (is that a word? for sure) drumming. Glenn Porter can almost carry a band.

List whatever is on your mind. This is an open post. Nobody cares what you put. Maybe. Lady Gaga is banned. No exceptions. She is the only one. Queen counts, so does Limp Bizkit, and even ABBA. Just no Lady Gaga. Have at it and raise one up with me. (This picture has nothing to do with this post. I just thought that it is impossible to go wrong with G.O.B.)

Please excuse the awkward title - wait, sorry, actually just accept it because that is pretty much the perfect way to start off a post about !!! or Chk Chk Chk, if you please. They just came out with a new LP Strange Weather, Isn't It? a couple weeks ago that has helped me get reacquainted with the dance/funk/punk/rock group. It really is somewhat difficult to try to describe them with words, at least if you've ever listened to them. Their music and live performance is right in tune with the punctuation mark that they have so aptly named themselves after. Honestly, their name comes from some movie I remember watching in 8th grade called "The Gods Must Be Crazy", but I'd prefer to think that they were just trying to come up with a name that describes their style/energy. After reading up on them recently, its pretty phenomenal that they keep putting out the same style of music, much less, even remaining a functioning musical organism. Two of their past members have left this life in pretty tragic circumstances and yet they still keep on pumpin' the jams. Truthfully, this is probably the only band I can think of where you could pick up any of their releases and get the same product as another of their albums. With most bands that wouldn't be a good thing (well, depends on if you're into the jam band thing) but with !!! its probably the best thing. I just checked out their tour schedule and thankfully they will be coming to my town cause these guys are one of the top 10 shows I've seen. I'll put up a couple hooks to get you caught on. (Sorry, tried to put only the mp3's up via the Yahoo Media Player but I didn't major in computer building.)

Junip is basically José González' answer to Justin Vernon's Volcano Choir Project. Almost to a "T", actually. These guys have been playing together off and on since the late '90s, but have never really dedicated themselves to the project until now. No doubt it's been worth the wait, but be forewarned: listening to "Always" will most likely lead to a tormenting couple of months until the 27th of September, when their first full length, Fields, is finally released. Doubt my warnings at your own peril:

Wow, the coolest band around took advantage of an opportunity last night to incorporate members of what is possibly the second coolest band out there into their live performance of slow burner "Nobody Gets Me But You". And the results are absolutely filthy good. Dueling bassists, ?uestlove providing auxiliary percussion, and the massive payoff when they all finally cut loose result in something that is flat out too spectacular not to watch at least twice. Perhaps it would have been more fitting for Arcade Fire to name their 16-track, hour (plus)-long album after this single instead, but that's a forgivable offense when these guys (& gals) have reeled off their 3rd ridiculously good album in as many tries. In fact, their uniqueness and ability to turn out such consistent greatness have planted them firmly in territory that is inhabited by very few artists these days. The Suburbs is out tomorrow. Go get it.

Bizzarro Interpol is Dead, Long Live Interpol

Lofty ambitions aren't for everybody (I'm looking at you, ...Trail of Dead), and it appears Interpol have come to this realization before swerving too far off their own beaten path. They've defected from the evil empire (Capitol Records), ditched the artsy record covers, and put away the unnecessary instrumentation. Not sure if this return to the comforts of home (they're back with Matador) or the back to basics attitude will pay off, but at least there's hope.

"Lights" has been out there for awhile, but it's new around here, so enjoy if you haven't already. And if you're a diehard, a super ghetto leak of the whole album found its way into cyberspace last weekend. Just be warned: it's really bad. Not the "it's .03kbps lower quality, so don't cheapen the integrity of our band's artistic vision" kinda bad. I mean the "listening to a scratched up copy of the vinyl through a pillow" kinda bad. Personally, I shut it down 2 songs in. That's your call, ~~but Interpol drops on Tuesday, anyway.~~ Oops. Turns out that's the "Barricade" single that's being released Tuesday. The album isn't due until September 14.

But there's no question that Les Savy Fav can turn out an old school, straight forward indie rock song with the best of them. If you can get past all the Vampire Weekend associations - they're tight with each other, have lent band members to the same 80s synth/electro-pop/pseudo hip-hop collaboration, and flat out just sound similar at times - these guys are legitimately a really enjoyable band in their own right. In fact, if you've been drinking the hatorade when it comes to VW, there's a solid chance that you'll enjoy Ra Ra Riot, anyway. They're just that... pleasant. If, on the other hand, Ezra Koenig & Co. light your fire, then you need to accept my apology for wasting your time and just hit play already. The Orchard is due out August 24th, and for now you can download "Boy" if you're willing to go to the band's website and declassify your email address.

The Return of Deerhunter

After Cryptograms, I probably would have thought it more likely that I'd get excited about a Ron Artest rap album than anything Deerhunter could ever produce. But time heals all wounds, and so do transcendently awesome albums, two of which have been released by Deerhunter/Bradford Cox over the past two years. So here I am, pumped for September 28, 2010, and all the coma-inducing, reverb-drenched awesomeness that's coming with it. Stronger than love. Stronger than blood. Nobody can really quite put their finger on what it is but we all should feel lucky to have them around. They just keep it simple. Hope everyone is having a great summer. I have been, and I trust my fellow contributors have been as well; hence the lack of posts around here the last couple months. That being said, summer always has been, and always will be, my favorite time of year to listen to, and argue about, music. More often than not, it's filled with some of the years best releases, and it's always a great time to sit around and revisit the albums and songs that you'll always hold close to your heart. But this summer has been pretty unique, ironically. The number of great artists who have released or will release albums this year is staggering, but things have slowed considerably during these summer months. This definitely isn't all bad; as front-loaded as 2010 was, it's nice to be able to soak in some of the records that probably didn't get a fair shake to begin with (the month of May made it impossible to really listen to anything properly). But even taking that in to consideration, this summer has been more nostalgic for me than most. I've spent more time listening to albums that are pre-2005 than not, and needless to say it's been a lot of fun. So not surprisingly, the focus of my first post of the summer is taking a look back.

I'll begin this by saying that I never have been a fan of split singles. I know there is a lot of appeal to collectors, and a collector I am, but never of vinyl (I'd like to, but the idea of starting that up is just overwhelming). On top of that, I don't really like singles or eps in general. I find them frustratingly short. But, listening to playlists this summer has got me intrigued. So, to encourage discussion, I'm just gonna throw this out there:

The "E. Texas Ave."/"Blue Boy" split by Texas is the Reason and The Promise Ring is the greatest split 7-inch of all time.

Ya know, I had an obscene diatribe consisting of why anyone and everyone should absolutely love and admire The Cure but it just turned out to be a mindless sermon that everyone would just dismiss. So I condensed my thoughts into this. If you have your reservations or disgust on anything in the goth realm keeping you from this band then forget them. Cause basically every band you listen to right now or ever have has had The Cure as an influence. Very confident to say that. I know, I think of Chris Kattan in the SNL skit 'Goth Talk' whenever I think about The Cure too but there is way more than that behind Robert Smith. Way more. Completely unrecognized musical pioneer/genius. Not sure where 'The Head on the Door' or 'Disintegration' rank on Rolling Stone's best albums list but who really cares. What do they know? Can't rant anymore. Can only post songs. Might take up a whole page in this blog but well deserved. We'll go through a quick timeline.

Forgive me if this is old news to you but, WOAH DUDE! These guys were incredible. They were a band from the late 90s to early 2000s. My good friend Roy (who knows EVERYTHING about music) just turned me on to these guys last weekend and I feel like I've wasted at least 7 years of my life. I've got a fever for math rock and the only prescription is more Party of Helicopters. Yikes. Anyway, the song is "The Good Punk", it's from their last album in 2003, "Please Believe It". The whole thing is phenomenal. I'd suggest finding it. It really reminds me of things like Other Men, The Ladies, maybe Q and Not U. The vocals, at least, have a bit of a Rob Crow feel to them. Have ya a listen!

I've been having dreams where I'm at school surrounded by people and I look down to find out I am wearing no clothes. Thank goodness for cliches. The teacher notices, turns into Isaac Brock, points to the door, says "Sha-shaw, sha-shaw!" in the voice of Dale Gribble, and as the whiskey bottle he whips at me hits me right in the face I wake up. I'm going to be up front: This is not an objective post. If you've followed this blog at all, I've made it pretty apparent what I think of The National and their music. In fact, a few weeks ago I referred to them as "the best band this side of the Atlantic". I know, that's a pretty lofty declaration. I also know that anything I say beyond this point will probably now be chalked up to fanboy bias. But don't allow that to distract you; the proof is in the music. High Violet has done nothing but solidify their status as one of the best bands out there. And, by the way, if you somehow need more proof, look no further than their performance on The Late Show last night. They brought Sufjan-freaking-Stevens on stage with them, tossed him over to the side, had him oooooh and ahhhhhh and shake a tamborine a little bit, and that was it. His name was never even mentioned! I realize the guy isn't a household personality, but he did manage to produce one of the most critically acclaimed albums of the 00s, didn't he? Anyway, this song is filthy good. Check it:

Well, "My Time" now has a video, and it's a bit odd, to say the least. To be fair, these guys have always been a bit squirrelly, but lately they've been crossing the border and touring the land of confusion. I can live with the bad dancing. But Jake Snider masquerading as a skinnier version of early 80s Brian Wilson? That's just creepy. And we certainly cannot overlook the greatest atrocity of all: Dave Knudson has been relegated to the role of "backup singer"! And if you've heard the new album, you know this isn't just an anomaly. That being said, don't get it twisted; there are much worse things out there a person could be listening to, that's for sure. I just hope this is only a phase:

Ok, wait. I know what's going through your mind right now, but you've got to fight the urge to hurl your KFC "Double Down" at the screen. It's true; no one in this band has been remotely relevant in 15 years, but just hear me out. We all know that these guys are responsible for two of the best alternative rock albums of the 90s. You can also add to the equation that I am truly an eternal optimist. Ergo, I gave it a spin. Easy enough. Nothing controversial about that. However, what cannot be so easily explained away is the question of how I could possibly enjoy what I was hearing. I mean, seriously, these guys have done nothing but poop out absolute garbage material since the clock rolled over a new millennium. No matter whether it was collectively, alone, or as part of some feeble excuse for a "super" group, it was all awful. I had to listen to "Between the Lines" twice, just to confirm that I was, in fact, getting some gratification from what I was hearing. Unbelievably, the gratification was confirmed. It's hard to know why, or what to blame it on: The fact that finding a single alt-rock song that doesn't totally suck in today's music scene would be akin to discovering that unicorns are, in fact, real? Maybe. A pre-midlife crisis that has me searching for a new pre-game pump up album? Possible, but not likely. Maybe it's the fact that that this new track hearkens back to the sound of Tiny Music and Scott Weiland's first solo album, both of which I enjoyed? Hard to say. Whatever the case, it's certainly better than anything Velvet Revolver or Talk Show ever thought of producing. I know, the album will probably be atrocious, but you don't refuse to stop and smell the roses just because you know there's a landfill waiting for you on the other side of the train tracks, right?

By the way, in case you're still here, and somehow interested, the new album, entitled Stone Temple Pilots, drops May 25. Forgive me.

New Music; AKA: Completely Overwhelmed

Life has been busy as of late, and so have some of the best bands that are out there. I literally can't keep up with all the music that's been released recently, and I'm experiencing some anxiety over making sure all these albums get a fair shake. Thought I'd share some very vague first impressions from this carnival of musical awesomeness:

The National High Violet - Probably my frontrunner for album of the year at this point. Great album, and it gets better with every single listen. In other words, it's the balls.

Gorillaz Plastic Beach - You might recall me expressing my boredom with this album back in early March. You've probably also seen this thing get nearly universal acclaim everywhere else. Well, there's an easy explanation for that: I'm an idiot, and I got a hold of the fake leak with a bunch of remixes of b-sides, etc. Forgive me. This thing is legit.

Medications Completely Removed - It's a little more poppy than you might expect, but it's probably the best thing yet from the guys who used to be in Faraquet.

Minus the Bear Omni - I think this is a pretty solid bunch of songs, but it's definitely not what you expect (or maybe want) from a MTB album. The synth/guitar-shredding ratio is just way out of whack. Not sure what they were shooting for here, but I'm not giving up on it yet.

Band of Horses Infinite Arms - I'll go ahead and say it. I was about 90% sure this album was going to totally suck. And you know what, I think I was absolutely wrong. These guys are definitely in a different place than they were back in 2006, but aren't we all? Besides, I'm a sucker for those Beach Boys-ish harmonies and Ben Bridwell's voice.

Broken Social Scene Forgiveness Rock Record - I think the consensus on this one is that nobody knows what the crap is going on with BSS. But, at the same time, nobody ever really knows what's going on with these guys, and that's kinda what makes them awesome. I'm reserving judgement until a later date.

Jonsi Go - This has been out for a few weeks, but I haven't had a chance to say much about it. So here you go: It's really friggin' good. Get it. The end.

The New Pornographers Together - Just got a hold of this, but it sounds like it's right on par with everything else these guys have done, which is saying a lot.

Most of you probably already know who J. Robbins is. He's the frontman for Jawbox, Burning Airlines, Channels, etc.. But, what you may not know is that he has produced all of your favorite albums...well practically. I always knew he produced a few different things that I love, but I figured it was time to make another list, so here we go! This is my list of the top 10 J. Robbins produced albums. The video contains everything that should give it a rating of at least 'NC-17' and quite possibly a rating that has not been created yet. It was directed by the guy who did 'A Cross the Universe'. Not the movie with Beatles covers, but the one following electro-studs Justice. Not really important to mention that, but nevertheless. It has been taken off of YouTube in the US as it has drug use, nudity, disgusting nudity, violence, bloody violence, 'Saving Private Ryan' type of violence, and a good, ol' fashioned holocaust. First of all, Ugly Casanova's 2002 album Sharpen Your Teeth is one of my favorite albums of all time and now we're getting some more! The documentary "180 South: Conquerors of the Useless" will be released on DVD, June 8th. According to a press release, 180 South "retraces Yvon Chouinard's and Doug Tompkins' epic 1968 journey to Patagonia through the eyes of adventurer Jeff Johnson." The soundtrack features Issac Brock/Ugly Casanova, James Mercer of The Shins, Mason Jennings, and Love As Laughter, and will be released on June 22 on Brushfire Records. It looks like there are 9 Ugly Casanova songs, one of which is "Hotcha Girls" from Sharpen Your Teeth, the other 8 are all new! There are 2 songs from James Mercer including a cover of Neil Young's "Journey Through the Past", and then 1 from Mason Jennings, Love As Laughter, and Jack Johnson respectively. As far as I know, there is no word on whether it will be Ugly Casanova in true form, or if it will just be Brock. Here's to hoping John Orth and Tim Rutili make appearances! Emmet Malloy, director of White Stripes' Under Great White Northern Lights, produced the film and put together the soundtrack. Exciting stuff kids! Well, I guess with the way NBC has handled themselves lately, it should come as no surprise that the way they run their website is not much different. Flaming Lips play Pink Floyd's "Breathe" and it's pretty spectacular. And if you're feeling frisky, the Tracy Morgan part is pretty damn funny as well. Enjoy.

Now, I'm not going to claim that this is a sure thing but according to Big Boi's Twitter, this album has an "official" release date! So, on July 6th before you head out to buy it, maybe check back and make sure there's not a new "official" release date. But, all nonsense aside, this album is going to be ridiculous. If I had a most anticipated list, it would be this album 1 through 10, oh and I guess The National, Minus The Bear, etc. might be in there somewhere too.

So you're really pumped about one of your favorite band's new album. The release date comes closer and closer and anticipation is boiling over. You get a preview of one of the new songs and possibly a viewing of the cover art. As you wait patiently you start to wonder what direction this band is going to take the new album. You figure they might make it harder or groovier or they just might stick to the same formula that made you like them in the first place. So the time comes when you finally hear the album in its entirety and for some reason it completely blows. For example, say you've been out with your buddies, meet up with some broad, you feel like you're making a good impression and this might go somewhere. Then you buckle down, suck it up, cross your fingers and ask her to hang out again. You're riding a high, whether natural or alcohol induced, but then you're brought back to Earth or lower because the chick just punched you in the gut. That feeling rings too true. You feel awful, let down, almost betrayed. You have no real relationship or connection but for some reason the other party smacks you in the face. I've been there, other people have and I hope you have too cause if not then I want your life. The point of this is to try and get a bit of discussion and maybe some insight. I wanted to try and name some of the biggest artist let downs I have encountered and feel free to list your own cause it may make you feel better. Cause venting and complaining never feels better.

Oh good grief, it's the Beta Band. Do you realize what you did to so many people? You literally broke hearts around the world.

"Seriously? Broke hearts? Do you realize how difficult it is create records that are enjoyable? Not to get too defensive but I'd like to see you try. Honestly, was 'Heroes to Zeros' that bad?"

Yes!!! Very!!! It made no sense. Even the album artwork was terrible. Honestly, you guys went from a wide following to basically sprinting face first, willingly into a black hole. Who does that? You guys can't even say that you fell into the category of signing a major contract and having other people sticking their fingers in your soup. You literally jumped on a grenade and saved no one.

"Hey! We're not the only band to do that. I'm sure other artists have struggled to keep the fans happy. I mean, look at Elliot Smith. What happened to that guy? He pretty much vanished after 'Figure 8'. And don't tell me that album was his greatest."

He friggin' killed himself! With a steak knife! Don't tell me you're that far off from reality. However, you're right. It wasn't his greatest but it wasn't bad. At least he went off with like a B.A. Homeboy can go ahead and call himself one of the greatest songwriters that ever walked this planet.

"Well, I guess we didn't know that. Our bad. Surely you can come up with some other respectable bands that hit the skids prematurely. We can't be the only ones."

You're right. You're not. But I'll go ahead and chalk you guys up for being the poster child for biggest let down that I can remember. But here we go. I'll go ahead and name a number of others who walked the plank without coercion.

"Thanks. By the way, it's been rumored that we are working on a free-form jazz album that may or may not include the ghost of Dave Brubeck. Put that in your pipe and smoke it the eff up."

Whatever. Dream on. Next thing you'll say is that Bradley Nowell will be a guest vocalist/guitarist joined by Keith Moon playing the bongos. But anyways, I hope this list makes you feel a bit better, but it shouldn't. You guys need medicated therapy. But just so you know I'm not even gonna put you on the list because you are on a whole different list by yourselves. Congratulations, dopes.

Queens of the Stone Age - Lullabies to Paralyze: Hard to follow up from 'Songs for the Deaf' but gimme a break. Seriously not a single song to complement. Thank goodness Josh Homme has done a good job in Them Crooked Vultures.
Gnarls Barkley - The Odd Couple: Kind of in the same category. 'St. Elsewhere' was so good that it pretty much changed an entire year. I will give the song 'Blind Mary' a thumbs up.
Built to Spill - You in Reverse: Maybe age played a factor or maybe he wasted his tasty licks on his solo stuff but this just fell flat. Only redeeming factor was when the leaked copy came out and it had some guy yelling "who is Mike Jones?" every 30 seconds.
The Hives - The Black and White Album: The previous albums were so good that I still get pumped when I hear any song from them. This album only produces tears and hair loss when I think about it.
Hot Water Music - No Division: This album pretty much marks the steep decline of what used to be the most intense, no nonsense, rock band with the most conviction that I have ever encountered. Although I like it at times, it still cannot even compare to everything that came before. I literally get chills, seriously, from 'Forever and Counting' and 'Fuel for the Hate Game'. Too bad.
Alkaline Trio - From Here to Infirmary: Another band falls into the trap of trying to appeal to a certain crowd. Why not just stick to what worked? I personally think it was the loss of Glenn Porter. One of the few drummers in the world who can take a mediocre song and turn it into your favorite.
Mew - No More Stories: I can say that I was really stoked about a new album from a band that had such a heavy sound with great melodies that, somehow, incorporated a falsetto singer. I heard the single they released and felt okay about it but still thought there had to be more, bigger songs to compliment it. Nope.
Jimmy Eat World - Futures: 'Clarity' and 'Bleed American' along with various EP's really made this a band with concrete promise of progressing into stud-dom. Honestly, this is one of those forgettable albums that makes you realize that they have peaked. Haven't listened to anything new since. Do they have anything recently?

I could probably keep going for a bit but you get the point. Let your frustration flow in the comments below. Whatever it is, whether I agree or not, I feel your pain.

Sorry, I'm a few days late on this one, oh well. Here is Drive-By Truckers playing the song "Birthday Boy" on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon. It's off their new album "The Big To-Do." I'm really getting into this album. I never knew much about them and always thought they were kind of a joke band, but this stuff is really good! It's pretty straight forward country/indie rock. They're all really good, but my favorite song so far is "The Wig He Made Her Wear." I think it totally sounds like a Modest Mouse song. Have yourself a listen...

It's time once again for another completely objective (not) list from yours truly. The subject? I suppose the title gave that one away, so we'll move on to defining how I've defined the list:

How do we define which labels are "indie" labels and which ones aren't? This is a bit more hazy than I expected it to be. There are those labels that are obviously not considered independent because they are prominent members of the RIAA and own almost the entire known world: EMI, Warner Music Group, Sony BMG, and Universal Music Group. Each of those run a number of smaller labels (i.e. Warner Bros., Atlantic, Arista, Interscope, Columbia, RCA, etc.). So we can throw all of those out. Beyond that, there is a bit of a "gray" area. For one, many independent labels are at least partially owned by these major conglomerates (Sub Pop is 49% owned by Warner Music Group), and many more are actually listed as members of the RIAA. In the interest of full disclosure, I'll be up front about the fact that this list is a pretty liberal one: Many of the labels listed on the RIAA's site are there because of marketing and/or distribution deals. So if a label fell into that category or if a major label didn't own a controlling interest, I considered that label fair game. When I wasn't sure I checked with RIAA Radar. Take issue with that if you will.

How do we actually define which "indie" labels were chosen for the list? This basically came down to a question within a question: Artists or albums? Ultimately I decided to go with albums for one reason: Artists can move from label to label, and at the independent level it seems as though they can just about do that whenever they want (not so amongst the majors). The albums those bands produce, on the other hand, remain with the labels for the entirety of that labels existence (for the most part). So, for me, labels truly will always be defined by the music that they release, not the bands that they are currently home to. I suppose you could base a list off of what bands a label discovered, but that's getting too muddy and time consuming for me.

Speaking of consuming time, I've done too much of that already. I'll list a couple of albums as a short argument for each label, but for the sake of brevity there won't be any all-inclusive lists, and I only listed one album from any particular artist on that label, max. I'm sure many will have problems with the parameters I've set or the arguments I've presented, but so be it; Off we go:

Dischord: An Impression

This is sort of a companion piece to Ryan's last post. Faraquet's View From This Tower is one of my absolute favorite albums of all time and I've been waiting for close to the last 2 years for the vinyl to be repressed...and it's finally here!!! I just put an order in for Faraquet - View From This Tower, Jawbox - For Your Own Special Sweetheart, Q and Not U - No Kill No Beep Beep, and the new Medications, and let's just say I'm a little more than excited. Here is the list of all the represses that are available. They're all re-cut from the original tapes and remastered. Super boss. In my mind, Dischord is the quintessential label. They've worked hard to not fall in line with the corporate mentality, they keep prices low so you can buy music the artists want you to hear, and it's very obvious that they put the music first! So go buy some stuff because they deserve your money, and because you could probably order once a week and still find stuff you want, because let's face it...it's Dischord! Also, I just kind of happened upon this short documentary that was made about the label. It's only about 15 minutes long but it's pretty cool. Check it hard.

Retro Motion: Faraquet's "Cut Self Not"

Yesterday, in a post dealing with Medication's upcoming album, I mentioned "one of the best bands no one ever talked about." Today, I'm feeling compelled to talk about them. All the way back in the year 2000, my then fiance (now wife) and I drove a bazillion miles up to Chicago to watch Hey Mercedes at the Fireside Bowl, which I believe has since converted back into an actual bowling alley again. Hey Mercedes at that time were playing about their 20th show ever and were still more so recognized as a Braid reunion minus Chris Broach than the Vagrant band trying (in vein) to break through on MTV. Faraquet just so happened to be the other band that was also opening for Rocket From the Crypt that evening. Boy was I in for a surprise. I had absolutely never heard of these guys, who happened to share a city, label, and a similar sound with Fugazi. But when they started in with "Cut Self Not", I was floored, and the rest of the night immediately became the icing rather than the cake. That experience has never left me, and neither has the relevance of The View From This Tower, Faraquet's one and only LP. I realize that if you follow this blog at all, chances are that you've already heard these guys, but if that's not the case, do yourself a huge favor and give this a listen:

Sleigh Bells

Well, I'm honestly not sure what to say about these guys so I'll start with the facts. Sleigh Bells is a female/male duo comprised of Derek Miller and Alexis Krauss. Evidently they are the 2 leftovers after the other members of their group left to form Surfer Blood, of which I am totally a fan. They're releasing their first full length on May 11th on NEET Recordings, which is run by M.I.A.. There's something about it I really dig, but I don't necessarily love all the songs I've heard. I think it's the lo-fi rock sound mixed with some pretty filthy hip-hop beats. So, listen to it and let me know if I'm crazy. Here are a couple songs that are pretty boss.

Fang Island is a new band from Brooklyn, New York. They've got kind of a prog/math/indie rock sound. Some of the guitar stuff reminds me of Ratatat. It's just pretty intense, noisy rock that will make you keep checking to see if your head is still there. They just released their self titled album on Sargent House, home of bands such as Red Sparowes and Russian Circles. It's so so def.

One of the best bands no one ever talked about, Faraquet, disbanded a few years ago and then mostly re-banded (?) a few years after that to form Medications. For the most part, Medications has sounded like Faraquet with a different name over the course of their two releases. That may change with the release of their second full length, Completely Removed, or so it seems based off the only track to be leaked thus far, "Long Day". Obviously this is a small sample size, and the track sounds great, but it sounds like some of the edge has gone from previous Medications and Faraquet releases. Ironic that this possible transformation might have been triggered by the departure of the bands bassist, who happens to be the only guy that wasn't also in Faraquet. No matter what, you can pretty much count on Removed totally dominating, so hopefully April 20th will quit being so pokey and get here.

Band of Horses: "Compliments"

Ben Bridwell and the rest of BoH are releasing a new album on the 18th of May. It's called Infinite Arms, and, judging by "Compliments", they're perfecting their unique brand of southern-fried indie rock. Just a word of warning though, the bedrock of this video is the whole Michael Jackson "Black or White" special effect (you know, where they morph different people from one to the next). The difference is they use entire landscapes instead of people, and it's kind of disorienting. Hope you brought your puke bucket:

'24' Gets "Jacked"

Well, you could see this coming from as far away as just about any one of the plot twists of the past 3 seasons: 24 will come to an end at the conclusion of this, the eighth, season. Sort of. According to EW.com, a movie franchise is already in the works, which could be really interesting. Relieving Jack and Co. of the constraints that exist because of its "real-time" format could do a lot of good, and, according to Keifer Sutherland, this version of 24 will definitely not be held within those same confines. Can't say I blame them. As Keifer also states in the article, “The writers are producing the equivalent of 12 films a year, which is unheard of." Good point. Ironically, this season has done a much better job of keeping me on my toes than either of the past two. That is, until they pulled out the old "there's a double agent that's infiltrated CTU" plot twist again. Anyway, now that this has all been decided, maybe it will heighten anticipation a little bit as this season winds down. We shall see. I wonder what they're gonna do with the clock sequence at the end? Maybe it will explode or something...

Local Natives are a relatively new band from Silver Lake, Los Angeles, California. Their new record Gorilla Manor came out Feb. 16, on French Kiss Records. It took me a little while to really get into, but now I basically just can't stop listening to it. They don't really remind me of any specific band, but parts of songs remind me of things like My Morning Jacket, Fleet Foxes, Midlake, and even a little Beach Boys. So just check it out because it's really good. Here is a video of them playing an acoustic version of Sticky Thread.

Rogue Wave rocked Jimmy Fallon's show last night with "Solitary Gun", which, when it's all said and done, might be the most enduring track from their new album, Permalight. On a side note, I'm wondering if anyone behind the stage had actually ever heard this song before the pre-show warmup, or if they'd ever even heard of the band itself. If not, they do a decent job of faking it, but it just seems kinda like some weird Late Night version of MTV Beach House or something. I don't know; maybe it's just me. Anyway, enjoy:

Enemies is an instrumental/prog/math rock band from Ireland. I didn't know they made music like this in Ireland either. Anyway, they had an Ep and 7" a couple years ago that were both amazing and they are supposed to have a new full-length out sometime this summer on Richter Collective. There's no official release date yet, but chances are, I'll post something when there actually is. So check 'em out. Season 2 of Nurse Jackie starts Monday, March 22nd! This is just another in the string of great Showtime shows. I'm really looking forward to this because the first season left off on a major cliff hanger. If you haven't been watching, you should totally check it out. It's got Edie Falco, it's about drugs, blood & infidelity, and is easily the best hospital show...maybe ever. Sorry Grey's Anatomy, ER, Scrubs, Hawthorne, & etc. fans. If you're into mediocrity this may not be for you.

Deftones - Rocket Skates

Here is the new video from the Deftones upcoming album "Diamond Eyes." This comes after the, at least, semi-completion of the album "Eros" which the band felt didn't meet their expectations. Sergio Vega, the bass player from Quicksand played bass on "Diamond Eyes" in place of Deftones original bass player Chi Cheng who was in a terrible car accident and subsequent coma. The album comes out May 18, 2010. Our prayers go out to the Deftones, Chi and his family.

It's Finally Here: HBO's The Pacific

It's taken over a year of waiting, but The Pacific has finally arrived. It debuts tomorrow night on HBO, and, by most accounts, it was well worth the wait - it has thus far received a cumulative score of 87 on Metacritic (equating to "Universal Acclaim" on their scale). Some have even gone so far as to declare it better than Band of Brothers (which was also produced by Steven Spielberg, Tom Hanks, & HBO), though I'm not sure that's really possible. I guess we'll see. Until then, chew on this (be warned: this trailer contains both graphic images and "colorful" language):

EW: Batman vs. Superman

It's the 75th anniversary of DC Comics, so some guy named Darren Franich over at Entertainment Weekly posed the idea of settling the Batman vs. Superman argument once and for all. He proposed two different ways to interpret the argument: (1) Which of the two has been able to evolve over 3/4 of a century and stay interesting, and (2) Who would win in a fight?

I don't think that anyone can come up with a realistic argument for Superman when it comes to question #1. Despite the extreme valleys that the Batman franchise has suffered through (i.e. an embarrassing television show in the 60s and two hideously terrible movies in the mid-90s), the peaks have been too high, and the potential for a completely human character with flaws is just so much greater than a perfect superhero with limitless power and no true equal.

In regards to question #2, Franich takes the lame, inside-the-box angle, without even really mentioning that in the only legitimate confrontation the two had (Frank Miller's The Dark Knight Returns, which is regarded by many to be the greatest graphic novel of all time), Superman flat out gets dealt with - by a 55 year-old Batman no less.

I better stop before I really get rolling. In the words of Linda Richman of Coffee Talk, "I'm a little verklempt, talk amongst yourselves..."

Overdue: Broken Bells on Letterman
